Replacing Your Oil Boiler

Should I replace my old boiler?

It may be summer but it’s a good time to prepare for those cold winters which we know are coming!. It looks like it’s going to be a cold one in the UK this year. Have you taken care of your heating and boiler?

With the colder weather approaching, keeping your home toasty warm is a hot priority. Because heating your home makes up for 60 percent of energy bills, it’s important to ensure your boiler is working as effectively as possible, and that you know the right time to replace it.

There are considerable savings to be had when replacing your boiler, but think on and don’t take everything at face value. The potential saving of replacing your old, G-rated boiler with an A-rated alternative is £320 per year! While this is a staggering amount of money to pocket, it’s essential to establish the facts.

This statistic is based on a household having the oldest, least-efficient boiler possible for a detached house. In reality, if your boiler was purchased more recently, and includes a full set of heating controls, you’re more likely to save around half of that. Monitor your boiler and check for any signs of fault before arranging for a new boiler to be fitted.

So when should you replace your boiler?

As a general rule, boilers have a lifespan of 15 years. If yours is reaching that age, then it might be time to consider an upgrade. Annual services will ensure the best lifespan but, in truth, the older your boiler gets the harder it has to work to heat your home. It’s like all appliances really, they have their expiration date. The longer you leave your boiler, the less efficient it will become and the higher the chance of it malfunctioning.

Think ahead…

There’s how many months before winter?! Before you race ahead and purchase a boiler replacement, first consider your options. When it comes to boilers a one size fits all approach most certainly does not apply.

The most popular boiler type in the UK is the combination boiler (combi) that provide heat and hot water with no need for water tanks or cylinders. This type is available in either a oil or electric combi boiler.

  • Instant and unlimited heat and hot water when you need it
  • There’s no need to make space for a water tank in your home
  • Great for smaller homes with low hot water demands

  • The water pressure may be compromised if you need water for more than one tap at a time.

A conventional boiler sends hot water to your radiators and water cylinder, where it is stored for when you need it most. It can be less efficient than a combi but for large families with an even larger home to heat, this could be the best option for you.

  • Can provide water from various taps at once
  • They are suitable for larger home and are very easy to replace like-for-like

  • The hot water can run out and you’ll need to wait for it to re-heat
You will need to find room for both a cylinder and water tank

However, like the conventional boiler, you will still need to find space for a cylinder. This boiler type is most suitable for larger homes with more than one bathroom.

  • You can get water from multiple taps at one time
  • Ideal for larger family homes where there is a high demand for water

  • You don’t get water instantly like the combi boiler
  • You will need to find storage for a cylinder in your home

Choosing the right boiler is tricky, but whether you go for a oil fired combi boiler, system or conventional types, the decision will more than often boil down (get it?) to what is most suitable for your property. The key questions are:

  • How much space do you have available?
  • Do you have a large property or a family home to heat?
